Hawking likened depression to a black hole – a body that is seemingly very dark, but from which it is still possible to escape:

“The main idea of this lecture is that black holes aren’t as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons we once thought. Things can get out of a black hole both on the outside and possibly to another universe. So, if you feel you are in a black hole, don’t give up – there’s a way out.”

Hawking is one of the most prominent physicists of the turn of the century, known for his book A Brief History of Time. Recently, a film was made about his life, including his battle with ALS, which has confined him to a wheelchair since he was young. Despite his illness, he never gave up and devoted his life to science. He is still considered one of the greatest geniuses of our time and recently celebrated his 74th birthday. He continues to give lectures at universities around the world.
